Let \(H(\mathbb C)\) be the Fréchet space of all entire functions. A linear operator \(D\) on \(H(\mathbb C)\) is called \textsl{diagonal} with eigenvalue-set \(\{\lambda_n:n\in\mathbb N\}\), if \(D(z^n)=\lambda_nz^n\) and \(\limsup |\lambda_n|^{1/n}<\infty\). Note that the latter condition is necessary and sufficient for the operator \(\sum_{n=0}^\infty a_nz^n\mapsto \sum_{n=0}^\infty \lambda_n a_nz^n\) to be continuous on \(H(\mathbb C)\). The purpose of this paper is to study cyclic vectors and invariant subspaces of diagonal operators on \( H(\mathbb C)\). Of particular interest are conditions on the eigenvalues \(\lambda_n\) of the diagonal operator \(D\) on \( H(\mathbb C)\) to admit spectral synthesis. Recall that this means that every closed invariant subspace \(M\) for \(D\) equals the closed linear span of the eigenvectors for \(D\) that are in \(M\). For example, it is shown that the diagonal operator \(D\) on \( H(\mathbb C)\) is cyclic if and only if the eigenvalues of \(D\) are distinct and that a cyclic diagonal operator on \( H(\mathbb C)\) whose eigenvalue set is bounded admits spectral synthesis. But also the diagonal operator on \( H(\mathbb C)\) having eigenvalues \(\lambda_n=n\) is shown to admit spectral synthesis. In the last section, the authors prove that if \(\mathcal D_0\) is the (uncountable) collection of all cyclic diagonal operators whose set of eigenvalues \(\{\lambda_n:n\in\mathbb N\}\) satisfies \(\inf|\lambda_i-\lambda_j|: i\not=j\}>0\), then \(\mathcal D_0\) has a dense set of common cyclic vectors. The authors point out that it is not known whether the set of all cyclic diagonal operators on \( H(\mathbb C)\) has a common cyclic vector.
