A continuous function \(f\) from the interval \((0,1)\) into a real normed linear space is said to be \textit{regular} at \(x\) if there is a line \(L\) through \(f(x)\) such that, for each open interval \(U\) containing \(x\), there is an open interval \(V \;(\subseteq L)\) containing \(f(x)\) for which \[ \lim_{\text{diam}\, U \rightarrow 0} \frac{\inf\{\sup_{y \in U} \| f(y) - h(y)\| \}}{\text{diam}\,V} = 0, \] where the infimum is over all homeomorphisms \(h\) of \(U\) onto \(V\). The main theorem shows that there is a homeomorphism \(g\) of \((0,1)\) so that \(f\circ g\) is differentiable with everywhere nonzero derivative if and only if \(f\) is regular at each point of \((0,1)\). There is a third, much more geometrical condition, equivalent to these two but more difficult to express concisely. These statements generalize results of \textit{G.~Choquet} for finite-dimensional spaces [J.\ Math.\ Pures Appl., IX. Sér. 26(1947), 115--226 (1948; Zbl 0035.24201)].
