A coarse embedding between two metric spaces is a mapping which roughly preserves large distances; it need not be injective, surjective or continuous. This paper gives two sufficient conditions for a metric space to coarsely embed into a uniformly convex Banach space. According to \textit{G.~Kasparov} and \textit{G.--L.\ Yu} [Adv.\ Math.\ 206, No.~1, 1--56 (2006; Zbl 1102.19003)], such results have applications to the Novikov conjecture. The first condition involves maps from the metric space into the unit sphere of a uniformly convex Banach space. The second condition (actually a characterization) is local, i.e., it involves coarse embeddings of the finite subsets. Both results generalize work of several authors about coarse embeddings into Hilbert spaces.
