The authors deal with a blow-up problem. A blow-up phenomenon is the case that the solution of an ordinary or partial differential equation diverges in finite time. There are many differential equations with blow-up solutions, for example semi-linear reaction diffusion problems with nonlinear term, the heat equation with nonlinear boundary condition, or the nonlinear Schrödinger equation. There are also many mathematical papers concerning this phenomena dealing with the conditions for the solution to blow-up, finding the blow-up set or blow-up time. There are also papers dealing with a numerical approximation of these equations and investigating the so called discrete blow-up phenomena according to its continuous case. This is the main topic of this paper, too. An efficient numerical algorithm for estimating the blow-up time for ordinary differential equations (ODEs) is proposed. This algorithm can be very well applied also to partial differential equations (PDEs) especially for their discretization via the method of lines. The first part of the paper consist of describing three typical blow-up problems of PDEs. Then an algorithm for estimating the blow-up time is presented. The main idea of this algorithm is based on a transformation of the ODE into a tractable form by the arc length transformation technique and then generate a linearly convergent sequence to the blow-up time. Moreover the sequence can be accelerated by the Aitken \(\Delta^2\) method. Finally for three blow-up examples the efficiency of proposed algorithm is presented.
