The author gives a very interesting and comprehensive survey and discussion of the so-called conductor inequality and its applications. Let \(\Omega\) be an open set in \(\mathbb{R}^n\), \(1\leq p<\infty\), and \(M_t=\{x\in\Omega: |f(x)|>t\}, t>0.\) The inequality \[ \int\limits_{0}^\infty \text{cap}_p(\overline{M_{at}},M_t)d{t^p}\leq c(a,p)\int\limits_\Omega |\text{grad}\, f|^pd{x}, \tag{1} \] where \(a>1\), is called the \textit{conductor inequality}, and its consequence \[ \int\limits_{0}^\infty \text{cap}_p(\overline{M_{t}},\Omega)d{t^p}\leq C(p)\int\limits_\Omega |\text{grad} \;f|^pd{x}, \] is called \textit{capacitary inequality}, both having numerous applications to the theory of Sobolev spaces, linear and non-linear PDE, calculus of variations, Dirichlet forms, Markov processes, etc. In this paper the author proves inequality (1), its discrete version proved by the author in 1972, and discusses various applications. He mainly deals with applications of the conductor inequalities to two measure Sobolev type imbeddings. The obtained results, as the author supposes, are unattainable by means of capacitary inequalities. In particular, the one-dimensional (\(n=1\)) inequalities \[ \left(\int\limits_\Omega |f|^q d\mu\right)^\frac{1}{q} \leq \left(\int\limits_\Omega |f^{(m)}|^p dx + \int\limits_\Omega |f|^p d\nu\right)^\frac{1}{p},\;m=1,\;m=2, \] are studied, where \(\mu\) and \(\nu \) are locally finite nonzero measures on \(\Omega\). Multidimensional conductor \((p,l)\)-capacitary inequalities for fractional Sobolev \(L_p\)-norms of order \(\ell\in (0,1)\cup (1,2)\) and applications to two measure multidimensional inequalities with fractional norms are also considered.
