    Let \(H\) be a separable, infinite-dimensional Hilbert space over \(\mathbb C\), let \({\mathcal B}(H)\) denote the bounded and \({\mathcal K}(H)\) the compact operators on \(H\). An operator \(A \in {\mathcal B}(H)\) is said to have a generalized inverse if there is \(B \in {\mathcal B}(H)\) such that \(ABA = A\). Suppose that \(\phi : {\mathcal B}(H) \to {\mathcal B}(H)\) is a bounded, unit preserving linear bijection such that \(A \in {\mathcal B}(H)\) has a generalized inverse if and only if \(\phi(A)\) has. The authors prove that \(\phi({\mathcal K}(H)) \subset {\mathcal K}(H)\) and that the induced linear map on the Calkin algebra \({\mathcal B}(H) / {\mathcal K}(H)\) is either an automorphism or an anti-automorphism.
