It is known that the Gelfand-Kirillov dimension of an associative algebra cannot be strictly between 1 and 2 (Bergman's gap). Recall that a graded \(K\)-algebra \(R=\bigoplus_{n\geq 0}R_n\) is called finitely graded, if it is a finitely generated algebra and if \(R_0\) is a finite dimensional space over \(K\). \textit{M. Artin} and \textit{J. T. Stafford} described the structure of finitely graded domains with quadratic growth in terms of algebras associated with automorphisms of elliptic curves [Invent. Math. 122, No. 2, 231-276 (1995; Zbl 0849.16022)]. They also proved that there are no finitely graded domains with Gelfand-Kirillov dimension strictly between \(2\) and \(11/5\). It was conjectured that a finitely graded domain cannot have Gelfand-Kirillov dimension strictly between 2 and 3. Earlier, this conjecture was proved by the author in case of an algebraically closed field \(K\) [\textit{A. Smoktunowicz}, Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 133, No. 7, 1925-1928 (2005; Zbl 1083.16016)]. Now the author proves this conjecture for all fields. Theorem. Let \(K\) be a field, and let \(R\) be a finitely graded \(K\)-algebra which is a domain. Then \(R\) cannot have Gelfand-Kirillov dimension strictly between \(2\) and \(3\).
