Let \(S\) be a translation invariant subspace of \(R\) and \(\Lambda\) a discrete subset thereof. The author calls a function \(f \in S\) a \(\Lambda\)-generator for \(S\) if the set of translates \(\{f(t -\lambda)\); \(\lambda \in \Lambda\}\) span \(S\). A first aim of this article is to provide a construction of \(\Lambda\)-generators for \(L^1(R)\) in terms of properties of quasianalytic classes. Indeed, the first of the two main results shows that a \(\Lambda\)-generator for \(L^1(R)\) exists if and only if the spectral radius of \(\Lambda\) equals infinity, which in turn is true if and only if \(\Lambda\) is the uniqueness set of a certain quasianalytic class. The second main result of the paper considers affine systems of the form \(\{f(a_j x-\lambda_k)\); \( j\in N,\) \(k \in Z\}\) and gives sufficient conditions for such a system to be dense in \(L^p(R)\), \(1 \leq p < \infty\).
