If \(G/K\) is an irreducible Riemannian symmetric space and \(G^\mathbb{C}/K^\mathbb{C}\) its complexification then there is a distinguished \(G\)-invariant subdomain \[ G/K \subset D\subset G^\mathbb{C}/K^\mathbb{C}, \] introduced by Akhiezer and Gindikin, which in many respect may be considered as the canonical complexification of \(G/K\). The domain \(D\) has several remarkable properties studied by different authors: It is Stein, carries a plenty of \(G\)-invariant plurisubharmonic functions and is a maximal connected set where the \(G\)-action is proper. The main objective of this paper is to determine how the above facts generalize to the case of a semisimple pseudo-Riemannian symmetric space \(G/H\) embedded in its complexification \(G^\mathbb{C}/H^\mathbb{C}\). In general, \(G^\mathbb{C}/H^\mathbb{C}\) might contain no Stein \(G\)-invariant subdomains. But the author proves that the tangent bundle \(T(G/H)\) contains a maximal \(G\)-invariant neighbourhood \(\Omega\) of the zero section where the adapted complex structure exists. Such \(\Omega\) is endowed with a canonical \(G\)-invariant pseudo-Kähler metric. The image \(D=\varphi(\Omega)\) of \(\Omega\) under the polar map \(\varphi\) possesses a \(G\)-invariant pseudo-Kähler metric. If \(G/H\) is of rank one then \(\varphi\) is globally injective and the domain \(\Omega\) is an increasing union of \(q\)-complete domains, where \((p,q)\) is the signature of the metric on \(G/H\).
