Let \(I^{(1)}\cup\dots I^{(p)}\) be a decomposition of \(I=[0,1]\) such that the interiors of \(I^{(j)}\) are pairwise disjoint. The authors consider mappings \(f\) of \(I\) such that, for any \(j\), \(f:I^{(j)}\to I\) is a diffeomorphism with \(| f'| >1\). They describe a broad class of potentials for \(f\) that admit unique equilibrium measures. This class includes some continuous potentials that are not Hölder continuous. The authors construct a family \(\phi_c\) of potentials for which there exists a critical value \(c_0\) with the following property: for any \(0<c<c_0\) there exists a unique equilibrium measure for \(\phi_c\) which is supported on \((0,1]\), while for \(c>c_0\), the equilibrium measure is the Dirac measure at 0.
