The paper is concerned with the following differential equation \[ -r\left(x\right)y^\prime\left(x\right)+q\left(x\right)y\left(x\right)=f\left(x\right),\quad x\in \mathbb R, \] where the unknown function \(y\left(x\right)\) is supposed to tend to zero as \(\left| x\right| \rightarrow\infty.\) Here \(f\in L_p\left(R\right),\) \(p\in\left[1,\infty\right]\), \(r\) is a positive continuous function and \(q\) is a locally integrable nonnegative function. The authors study the correct solvability of this problem, i.e., the existence of a unique solution for any choice of \(f\) and its continuous dependence on \(f\). Necessary and sufficient conditions, expressed in a non-local form, are given separately for the cases \(p=1,\) \(p\in\left(1,\infty\right)\) and \(p=\infty\). Then, weaker and easier to check local criteria are deduced. Moreover, it is shown that under some assumptions the problem is not correctly solvable. Finally, an example is presented to illustrate the main results.
