A one-dimensional thermal analysis for the thermoelectric cooler is performed with bearing in mind the Thomson effect, the Joule heating, the Fourier heat conduction, and linearized radiation and convection heat transfer. The temperature distribution and cooling power are analytically derived and both are affected by the Thomson effect. The maximum attainable temperature difference and maximum allowable heat load is investigated. The results provide the theoretical basis for the possible development of thermoelectric materials and for an optimal design of a thermoelectric cooler.
