One purpose of this paper is to extend the following theorem by Kirk. Suppose \(M\) is compact and \(g:M\rightarrow M\) is continuous with diminishing orbital diameters. Then for each \(x\in M\), some subsequence \(\{g^m(x)\}\) of the sequence \(\{g^n(x)\}\) of iterates of \(x\) has a limit which is a fixed point of \(g\). Instead of requiring that the space \(M\) is compact the author requires that the orbits be relatively compact, and instead of requiring that the orbits have diminishing diameters they are required to be proper. In addition the author proves that \(g\) has a common fixed point with every \(f\) nontrivially compatible with \(g\).
