This paper deals with the estimation of the temperature error at a checkpoint for the finite-difference solving of the unsteady one dimensional heat conduction equation. It is based on a differential approximation instead of being based on direct estimation of the residual. Local truncation error estimates from a Taylor series with the remainder in Lagrange form and adjoint equations are used. The bound on the remaining error as a function of the sizes of temporal and spatial steps is obtained.
