Let \(X\) be a smooth irreducible projective variety defined over the complex numbers. The moduli spaces of sheaves which are semistable with respect to some ample line bundle \({\mathcal O}_X(1)\) have been much studied. In this paper the author is concerned with very unstable sheaves, for instance vector bundles \(E\) which possess a subsheaf \(\Gamma\) whose slope is much bigger than that of \(E\). More precisely, he studies wide extensions, that is extensions of the form \(0\rightarrow G^*\rightarrow{\mathcal E}\rightarrow F\rightarrow 0\), where \({\mathcal E}\) is locally free, \(F\) and \(G\) are regular and certain Ext groups vanish (a sheaf \(F\) is regular if it is torsion-free, \(F^{**}\) is simple and \(2\)-smooth and \(F^{**}/F\) is zero or perfect of codimension \(2\)). The main object is to study the deformations of wide extensions and to construct moduli spaces with locally defined universal bundles. In the case where \(\dim X>2\), there can exist fine moduli spaces.
