The linear preserver problem concerns the linear mappings on spaces of matrices leaving certain properties invariant, for example their rank. Many problems on this subject can be reduced to the investigation of rank-one preservers, i.e. the mappings preserving rank-one matrices. In the paper under review the authors study additive rank-one preservers on block triangular matrix spaces over arbitrary fields and determine their general form. These results generalize results due to \textit{J. Bell} and \textit{A.R. Sourour} [Linear Algebra Appl. 312, 13--33 (2000; Zbl 0962.15002)]. As an application the authors obtain a classification of additive mappings \(\psi\) preserving rank-additivity, i.e. \(rank(\psi(A)+\psi(B))=rank(\psi(A))+rank(\psi(B))\) whenever \(rank(A+B)=rank(A)+rank(B) \;,\) on block triangular matrices. This generalizes a result due to \textit{X. M. Tang} and \textit{G. C. Cao} [JP J. Algebra, Number Theory Appl. 3, No.~3, 405--413 (2003; Zbl 1065.15003)].
