This is a follow-up paper to [\textit{C.~Choi} and \textit{J.~M.~Kim}, J.~Math.\ Anal.\ Appl.\ 316, No.\,2, 722--735 (2006; Zbl 1098.46016)], where the authors say that a Banach space \(X\) has the weak approximation property if every compact operator \(T: X\to X\) is the limit of a net of finite-rank operators for the topology of uniform convergence on compact sets, and they say that \(X\) has the quasi approximation property if the convergence takes place with respect to the operator norm. Here the author introduces the corresponding notion of metric weak approximation property in analogy to the classical metric approximation property, and he shows that it passes from \(X^*\) to \(X\), and if in addition \(X^*\) is separable, then \(X\) has the quasi approximation property. The converse is shown to be false by means of examples from the literature. Actually, the author also defines the notion of metric quasi approximation property by requiring that the unit ball of the space of finite-rank operators is norm-dense in the unit ball of the space of compact operators. Unfortunately, the obvious fact that this is just the same as the quasi approximation property has gone unnoticed by the author (and the referee). Hence all the results referring to the metric quasi approximation property are of limited interest.
