The main object of the paper is the study of the Cauchy problem for the nonlinear beam equation \[ \partial^2_t u(x,t) + \Delta^2 u(x,t) = \pm u^p(x,t),\quad x\in\mathbb{R}^n, \;t>0, \] for \(p\geq 2\), and with initial data \[ u(x,0)= u_0(x),\quad \partial_t u(x,0)=u_1(x),\quad x\in\mathbb{R}^n. \] It is assumed that \(u_0\) and \(u_1\) belong to homogeneous or inhomogeneous Besov spaces \(\dot{B}^s_{2,q}(\mathbb{R}^n)\) or \(B^s_{2,q}(\mathbb{R}^n)\), respectively, or corresponding homogeneous Sobolev spaces \(\dot{H}^s(\mathbb{R}^n)\). In dependence upon \(n\in\mathbb{N}\), sufficiently large \(p\), and for \(1\leq q\leq \infty\), results for local and global solvability of the above problem are obtained. The smoothness parameter \(s\) is related to the critical Sobolev index \(s_p=\frac{n}{2}-\frac{4}{p-1}\) in the sense that, e.g., \(u_0 \in \dot{B}^{s_p}_{2,q}(\mathbb{R}^n)\) and \(u_1 \in \dot{B}^{s_p-2}_{2,q}(\mathbb{R}^n)\) imply the existence of some \(T>0\) such that there exists a unique solution \(u(x,t)\) in \(\mathbb{R}^n \times [0,T]\) with \(u\in C([0,T], \dot{B}^{s_p}_{2,q}(\mathbb{R}^n))\) and \(u_t\in C([0,T], \dot{B}^{s_p-2}_{2,q}(\mathbb{R}^n))\). There are further assertions dealing with the influence of higher smoothness \(s>s_p\) in the initial data on the properties of the solution \(u(x,t)\). The second main outcome deals with the small initial-value problem, whereas Theorem~1.3 gives a scattering result. These results are presented in a first section after the introduction, then basic (Strichartz) estimates for corresponding linear problems are studied. In Section~3 nonlinear estimates are obtained, and all proofs of the main assertions can be found in the final and most comprehensive Section~4 of this interesting paper.
