The Nottingham group over the prime field \(\mathbb{F}_p\) is the group \(N(p)\) of formal power series \(\{t(1+a_1t+a_2t^2+\cdots )\mid a_i\in\mathbb{F}_p\}\) under substitution. Recently it has been proved by Ershov that \(N(p)\) is finitely presented. The author of this paper exhibits 2 generators for \(N(p)\), when \(p>3\), and \((p+5)/2\) relations that they satisfy modulo terms of the lower central series, and begins an investigation of the properties of an infinite pro-\(p\)-group \(\mathcal G\) with a pair of generators satisfying these relations, illustrating in particular what can be proved using \(p\)-th powers. The ultimate aim is to show that the graded Lie algebras of \(\mathcal G\) and \(N(p)\) with respect to their lower central series are isomorphic. This paper explores how this might be done and is the starting point for further investigations in this direction. Some indication is also given as to what is known so far for \(p=5\); in this case its seems that a proof is almost complete.
