Let \(\Sigma\) be a closed surface of genus \(g>1\) with fundamental group \(\pi_1 = \pi_1 (\Sigma)\). One of the fundamental problems in complex hyperbolic geometry is to find all discrete, faithful, geometrically finite and purely loxodromic representations of \(\pi_1\) into \(\text{SU}(2,1)\), (the triple cover of) the group of holomorphic isometries of \(\mathbb H^2_{\mathbb C}\). In particular, given such a representation, can we find an open neighbourhood of it comprising representations with these properties. A discrete faithful representation \(\rho\) is said to be \(\mathbb R\)-Fuchsian if it is conjugate to a representation \(\pi_1 \to \text{SO}(2,1) < \text{SU}(2,1)\). The main result of the paper states that for a given \(\mathbb R\)-Fuchsian representation \(\rho_0\) of \(\pi_1\) there exists an open neighbourhood \(U=U(\rho_0)\) of \(\rho_0\) on \(\Hom(\pi_1, \text{SU}(2,1))/\text{SU}(2,1)\) so that any representation \(\rho\) in \(U\) is complex hyperbolic quasi-Fuchsian (that is discrete, faithful, geometrically finite and totally loxodromic).
