The functional equation \[ Q(z-x)+Q(z-y)=\frac{1}{2}Q(x-y)+2Q \biggl(z-\frac{x+y}{2}\biggr), \] which was motivated by Apollonius' identity \(\|z-x\|^2+\|z-y\|^2=\frac{1}{2}\|x-y\|^2+2\|z-\frac{x+y}{2}\|^2\) in inner product spaces, is said to be the quadratic functional equation of Apollonius type. The authors introduce the so-called generalized Apollonius type quadratic functional equation \[ \begin{multlined} Q\left(\left(\sum_{i=1}^nz_i\right)-\left(\sum_{i=1}^nx_i\right)\right) + Q\left(\left(\sum_{i=1}^nz_i\right)-\left(\sum_{i=1}^ny_i\right)\right)\\= \frac{1}{2}Q\left(\left(\sum_{i=1}^nx_i\right) - \left(\sum_{i=1}^ny_i\right)\right) + 2Q\left(\left(\sum_{i=1}^nz_i\right) - \frac{\left(\sum_{i=1}^nx_i\right)+\left(\sum_{i=1}^ny_i\right)}{2} \right), \end{multlined} \] and show that this functional equation is quadratic, i.e. it is a solution of the quadratic functional equation \(Q(x+y)+Q(x-y)=2Q(x)+2Q(y)\). They also nicely prove the generalized Hyers-Ulam-Rassias stability of generalized Apollonius type quadratic mappings in Banach spaces.
