\textit{H. Kimura, Y. Haraoka} and \textit{K. Takano} [Proc. Japan Acad., Ser. A 69, 99--104 (1993; Zbl 0822.33007)] introduced a general hypergeometric function of type \(\lambda\), for any given partition \(\lambda\) of \(n\) defined on the space \(Z\) of \(r \times n\) complex matrices of rank \(r, r < n.\) In this paper, the authors construct explicitly the limit process by which the general hypergeometric system for various partitions \( \lambda \neq (1,1,\dots,1)\) can be obtained from the system of type \( \lambda = (1,1,\dots,1)\). They clarify a relation between the geometry of stratification for the set of regular elements of the Lie algebra and the process of confluence for the general hypergeometric system. This gives directly the process of confluence of singular points of the Gauss hypergeometric equation to Kummer's confluent hypergeometric equation.
