Virtual knot theory, introduced by \textit{L. H. Kauffman} [Eur. J. Comb. 20, No. 7, 663--690 (1999; Zbl 0938.57006)], is a generalization of classical knot theory. The author gives an overview of basic notions and results on virtual and welded links, virtual and welded braids, representations by automorphisms, and groups of virtual links and announces some new results on this subject.
