This paper suggests a programme of possible extensions of the classical Ostrowski inequality, a result that estimates the deviation of the values of a differentiable function from its arithmetic mean. This programme is to consider: (i) a larger class of functions such as absolutely continuous functions, with refinements for \(L^p\) derivatives, see the paper of \textit{A. M. Fink} [Czech. Math. J. 42, No. 2, 289--310 (1992; Zbl 0780.26011)] and the book by \textit{D. S. Mitrinović, J. E. Pečarić} and \textit{A. M. Fink} [``Inequalities involving functions and their integrals and derivatives'' (1991; Zbl 0744.26011)]; (ii) random variables; (iii) multiplicative means, that is the geometric mean with respect to the measure \(dt/t\), see an article by the second author [in: Inequality theory and applications Vol. 1, 243--255 (2001; Zbl 1059.26019)]; (iv) other mean values such the geometric mean; (v) using other norms in the classical case. Various examples of results are given and of course much work has been done by others, in particular the authors mentioned above.
