The main result of this article is the following extension of J. G. Thompson's theorem about the nilpotence of kernels of Frobenius groups: Theorem A. Let \(R\) be a group of prime order \(r\) acting on the \(r'\)-group \(G\). Let \(p\) be an odd prime and let \(S\) be a Sylow \(p\)-subgroup of \(G\). If \(C_G(R)\) is a \(p'\)-group, then \(N_G(S)\) controls strong fusion in \(S\) with respect to \(G\). A second, more technical, Theorem B ensures that if \(p\) is an odd prime, if \(S\in\text{Syl}_p(G)\), if \(T\leqslant Z(S)\) and \(T\triangleleft N_G(J(S))\), then either \(T\) is weakly closed in \(S\) with respect to \(G\), or \(N_G(T)\) contains a cyclic \(p'\)-subgroup \(X\) acting nontrivially on \(T\) and transitively on \([T,X]^*\). -- The proofs involve a delicate module-theoretic analysis.
