A symmetry of a compact Riemann surface \(X\) of genus \(g\) is defined to be an anticonformal involution \(\tau:X\to X\). Surfaces admitting some symmetry are called symmetric; these surfaces correspond to curves which may be defined over \(\mathbb{R}\). The fixed point set of a symmetry consists of \(\gamma\) simple closed curves which are called ovals. It is known for long that \(0\leq\gamma\leq g+1\). The Riemann surface \(X\) (not necessarily symmetric) is said to be of type \((n, m)\) if its group \(\Aut X\) of conformal automorphisms is cyclic of order \(n\) and \(X/\Aut X\) has authors determine necessary and sufficient conditions on \(n<1\), \(n\) odd, \(m\geq 1\), \(g\geq 2\) and \(\gamma\) such that a symmetric compact Riemann surface of genus \(g\) and type \((n,m)\) exists admitting a symmetry with \(\gamma\) ovals. The results are too complicated to be given here.
