The point of origin of the article is a theorem asserting that a core-free permutable subgroup of a finite group is contained in the hypercentre [\textit{R. Maier, P. Schmid}, Math. Z. 131, 269-272 (1973; Zbl 0259.20017)]. It is known that this result is false even for finitely generated groups. The authors of the article under review raise the following question: to what extent can this theorem be generalized to classes of infinite groups? They call this question the Maier-Schmid problem. The authors show that this result or some of its versions are valid for many classes of infinite groups (for example, locally finite groups with min-\(p\) for all primes \(p\), finitely generated linear groups, groups with the weak maximal or the weak minimal condition for normal subgroups, Abelian-by-finite groups, and others). For any \(p\) an example of a metabelian countable \(p\)-group has been constructed.
