Let \(X\) be a Banach lattice and let \(1 \leq p < \infty\). The authors study tensor products of \(\ell_p\) and \(X\) and the Radon--Nikodým property for these. The tensor norms studied are the projective tensor norm of Fremlin \(\ell_p \hat{\otimes}_F X\) [\textit{D.\,H.\,Fremlin}, Math.\ Ann.\ 211, 87--106 (1974; Zbl 0272.46050)]) and the injective tensor norm of Wittstock \(\ell_p \tilde{\otimes}_i X\) [\textit{G. Wittstock}, Lect.\ Notes Phys.\ 29, 67--84 (1974; Zbl 0329.46007); Arch.\ Math.\ 25, 627--634 (1974; Zbl 0311.46002)]). Both of these tensor products are again Banach lattices. The authors prove a very nice identification, Proposition~6, of these two tensor products with subspaces of the sequence spaces \(\ell_p^{\text{strong}}(X)\) and \(\ell_p^{\text{weak}}(X)\), respectively. The main results are that \(\ell_p \hat{\otimes}_F X\) has the Radon--Nikodým property if and only if \(X\) has the Radon--Nikodým property, and that \(\ell_p \tilde{\otimes}_i X\) has the Radon--Nikodým property if and only if \(X\) has the Radon--Nikodým property and each positive operator from \(\ell_{q}\) to \(X\) is compact, where \(1/p + 1/q = 1\) and we interpret \(\ell_q\) as \(c_0\) if \(p=1\).
