The authors of the paper under review are interested in the inequality \[ t^{-\frac\alpha\beta}\Phi_1 \left(t^{-\frac1\beta}d(x,y)\right)\leq p(t,x,y)\leq t^{-\frac\alpha\beta}\Phi_2 \left(t^{-\frac1\beta}d(x,y)\right), \] where \(p\) is a generalisation of the usual (Gauss--Weierstrass) heat kernel and \(x\), \(y\) belong to a fractal set with metric \(d\), \(\alpha\), \(\beta\) are positive parameters and \(\Phi_1\), \(\Phi_2\) positive, decreasing functions. They look in particular for upper bounds of the form (hence the ``on-diagonal upper bounds'') \[ p (t, x, y)\leq C t^{-\theta}. \] The main result is an equivalence statement for the latter inequality, involving other inequalities (Poincaré, Nash) and the spectral properties of associated operators (these are obtained with the help of Hilbertian structures derived from Dirichlet forms). A second result provides conditions for the Poincaré inequality of the first result to hold. The paper ends with the construction of some specific applications.
