Let \((x_t,P_x)\) be the diffusion associated with a strongly local quasi-regular, symmetric Dirichlet form \(({\mathcal E},{\mathcal D}({\mathcal E}))\), \(N_t^u\) the energy part of the Fukushima decomposition of the quasi-continuous version of \(u\in {\mathcal D}({\mathcal E})\), and \((P_t^u)\) the corresponding generalized Feynman--Kac semigroup, defined as \(P_t^uf(x)=E_x[\exp \{N_t^u\}f(x_t)]\). Two necessary and sufficient conditions are given for the latter to be strongly continuous, and an example supplied for strong continuity in the case that the energy measure of \(u\) is not of Kato but of Hardy class.
