Dimension reduction, that is the ignoring of inessential variables in asymptotic dynamics of nonlinear dynamical systems, is the main requirement for a qualitative understanding of the dynamics. There are various approaches to this problem for autonomous systems. In the nonautonomous case this problem is much harder to solve, and is not as well studied as in the autonomous case. The paper studies the basic problem of order reduction of nonlinear systems with time-periodic coefficents in the state space, where the equations of motion are expressed as a set of first-order equations. In the first step they are transformed using Lyapunov-Floquet transformation such that the linear parts of the new set of equations are time-invariant. Now, four order reduction methodologies, namely linear and nonlinear projections via singular perturbation, and post-processing approach and invariant manifold technique, are suggested. The invariant manifold technique yields a unique 'reducibility condition' under which an accurate nonlinear order reduction is possible. Unlike perturbation or averaging type approaches, the parametric excitation term is not assumed to be small. An alternative approach of deriving reduced order models in direct second-order form is also presented, proceeding analogously. Some examples are given to show potential applications to real problems using the above-mentioned methodologies. Order reduction possibilities and results for various cases including `parametric', `internal', `true internal' and `true combination resonances' are discussed. A generalization of these ideas to periodic-quasiperiodic systems is indicated and demonstrated by means of an example.
