The authors consider a physical system with hysteretic component that can be represented by a map \(x(t)\to\Phi_s(x)(t)\), which is referred to as the ``true'' hysteresis. The so-called Bouc-Wen model represents the true hysteresis in the form \[ \Phi_{BW}(x,t)=\alpha k(t) +(1-\alpha)Dkz(t),\tag{1} \] \[ \dot z=D^{-1}\bigl(A\dot x-\beta|\dot x||z|^{n-1}z-\gamma\dot x|z|^n\bigr),\tag{2} \] where \(\dot z\) denotes the time derivative, \(n\geq 1\), \(D>0\), \(k>0\), \(\alpha\in (0,1)\), \(x\) is the displacement and \(\Phi_s\) is a restoring force. The hysteretic force \(\Phi_s(x)(t)\) is represented as the superposition of an elastic component \(\alpha kx\) and purely hysteretic component \((1-\alpha)k Dz\). The paper is organized as follows: in Section 2 the authors define a class of \(T\)-periodic inputs used for the identification method. Section 3 gives a classification of Bouc-Wen models in terms of their input-output and energy dissipation properties. It also introduces a new form of the Bouc-Wen model (the normalized one) used in this paper. Section 4 introduces new functions which are very useful in describing analytically the limit cycle. In Section 5 the authors prove that the graph of the output versus the input of Bouc-Wen model goes asymptotically to a limit cycle; the authors also give an explicit equation of this graph. A numerical simulation illustrates the results in Section 6. The main contributions of this work are: to prove analytically that the response of Bouc-Wen model to a class of \(T\)-periodic inputs is asymptotically \(T\)-periodic; to give an exact and explicit analytic expression of the limit cycle; to propose an identification method for all parameters of Bouc-Wen model, including the parameter \(n\). This identification method is rigorous and is based on an analytic description of limit cycle which allows to estimate errors between the unknown exact model parameters and their corresponding reconstructions; to demonstrate analytically that the proposed method is robust with respect to \(T\)-periodic or constant disturbances.
