This monograph is mainly a scope of research results of group of scientists of École Polytechnique-Paris. The results concern crack theory and associated fields as fracture, yielding and material science. The presentation is very short, and parts of explanations are neglected. The reader needs to have deep knowledge of continuum mechanics (specially of elastictity and advanced mathematics). The monograph consists of the following chapters: 1. Deformation and fracture, 1--28; 2. Energetic aspects of fracture, 29--57; 3. Solutions of cracks problems, 61--93; 4. Thermodynamics of crack propagation, 97--107; 5. Dynamic fracture mechanics, 113--132; 6. Three-dimensional crack problems, 135--169; 7. Nonlinear fracture mechanics, 173--197; 8. The fluid-filled crack, 199--230; 9. Crack detection by scattering of waves, 233--251; 10. Tomographic evaluation of miaterials, 253--263; 11. The reciprocity gap functional for crack detection, 267--287; 12. Methods of solutions to inverse problems, 293--320 and appendices: A. Residual stresses in fracture mechanics, 323--327; B. Weak interface singularities, 329--333; C. Problems and solutions, 337--347. There are many problems for discussions, e.g. the Dugdale-Barenblatt crack presentation. Dugdale and Barenblatt cracks are absolutely different from physical point of view. Only the mathematical treatment of the cracks is similar. Altogether the monograph is an interesting and valuable contribution and can be used by researchers and graduate students.
