Let \(X\) be a Hilbert space with inner product \((\cdot ,\cdot )\). This paper is devoted to the study of critical points to the energy functional \(J(u)=2^{-1}(Lu,u)-g(\tau u)\) (for all \(u\in X\)), where \(L:X\rightarrow X\) is a bounded linear self-adjoint operator, \(g\) is a \(C^1\) functional on a Banach space \(Y\), and \(\tau :X\rightarrow Y\) is a linear compact embedding. Under different assumptions on the growth of \(g\), the main results of this paper establish the existence of critical points of \(J\). The abstract results are applied for solving some classes of semilinear elliptic equations with Dirichlet or Neumann boundary condition and resonant nonlinearity. The proof combines standard variational arguments, such as the saddle point theorem and minimization principles.
