Let \(X\), \(Y\) be compact connected topological spaces. A continuous mapping \(f\) from \(X\) onto \(Y\) is said to be confluent over locally connected continua in case, for each locally connected continuum \(Q\subset Y\), \(f\) maps each component of \(f^{-1}(Q)\) onto \(Q\). Let \(\Phi_c\) denote the class of all mappings \(f\) confluent over locally connected continua with the compact open topology. In this posthumous paper the author shows by example that \(\Phi_c\) need not be closed in \(Y^X\) even when \(X\), \(Y\) are arcwise connected subsets of the plane. He also shows, among other things, that if \(Y\) is locally connected, then \(\Phi_c\) is closed in \(Y^X\). A number of open questions are raised.
