    A weak Leray solution to the Cauchy problem for the Navier-Stokes equations is studied \[ \begin{aligned} \frac{\partial v}{\partial t}-\nu\Delta v+(v\cdot\nabla)v+\nabla p&=0,\quad \text{div}\, v=0\quad x\in \mathbb{R}^3,\;t\in (0,T) \\ v(x,0) &=v_0(x)\quad x\in \mathbb{R}^3. \end{aligned}\tag{1} \] It is proved that if \(p\in L_{loc}^2(\mathbb{R}^3\times[0,T))\) then the weak solution \(v\) to the problem (1) satisfies the energy equality \[ \frac{1}{2}\int\limits_{\mathbb{R}^3}| v(x,t_2)| ^2\,dx+ \nu\int\limits_{t_1}^{t_2}\int\limits_{\mathbb{R}^3}| \nabla v(x,t)| ^2\,dx\,dt= \frac{1}{2}\int\limits_{\mathbb{R}^3}| v(x,t_1)| ^2\,dx \] for every \(t_1,t_2\in[0,T)\) such that \(t_2\geq t_1\geq 0\). A similar result is obtained for the Euler system \[ \begin{aligned} \frac{\partial v}{\partial t}+(v\cdot\nabla)v+\nabla p&=0,\quad \text{div}\, v=0\quad x\in \mathbb{R}^3,\;t\in (0,T) \\ v(x,0)&=v_0(x)\quad x\in \mathbb{R}^3. \end{aligned}\tag{2} \] If \(p\in L_{loc}^2(\mathbb{R}^3\times[0,T))\) then the weak solution \(v\) to the problem (2) satisfies the energy equality \[ \int\limits_{\mathbb{R}^3}| v(x,t_2)| ^2\,dx=\int\limits_{\mathbb{R}^3}| v(x,t_1)| ^2\,dx \] for almost every \(t_1,t_2\in[0,T)\) such that \(t_2\geq t_1>0\).
