Using representation theoretical and number theoretical methods the authors investigate self-dual group codes and their extensions. The existence of a self-dual extended group code heavily depends on a particular structure of the group algebra which is defined by the number theoretic properties of the parameters of this algebra. The Euclidean case for characteristic 2 was treated by the authors in [IEEE Trans. Inform. Theory 50, No. 8, 1798--1803 (2004)]. In this paper the existence of Euclidean and Hermitian self-dual extended cyclic codes are characterized in semi-simple and modular cases. They also characterize the cases in which there is no self-dual Euclidean and Hermitian extended quadratic residue code, but there is some duadic code. The characterization of t-divisibility of the considered codes extends the Gleason-Pierce Theorem.
