Let \(T\) be a locally compact Hausdorff space and let \(C_0(T)\) be the space of those real continuous functions on \(T\) which vanish at infinity, equipped with the uniform norm. For a finite dimensional linear subspace \(G\) of \(C_0(T)\), let \(P_G:C_0(T)\to \mathcal{P}(G)\) denote the metric projection of \(C_0(T)\) onto \(G\), that is \(P_G(f)=\{g\in G:\| f-g\| =d(f,G)\}\). In this paper the author gives a characterization of those subspaces \(G\) of \(C_0(T)\) which have the property that there exists a continuous selection for the metric projection. A characterization of this subspaces has been also given by \textit{W. Li} [Continuous selections for metric projections and interpolating subspaces. Approximation and Optimization. 1. Frankfurt a. M.: Peter Lang (1991; Zbl 0743.41029)]. Using a work of \textit{T. Fischer} [``Continuous selections for semi-infinite optimization'', Math. Res. 35, 95--112 (1987; Zbl 0643.90050)], the author obtains an alternative characterization, called the disjoint leaves condition. Also it is proved that the two characterizing conditions are equivalent.
