Methods of complex analysis based on the Riemann-Hilbert boundary value problems have proven their capabilities and advantages for the asymptotic analysis. Many results for asymptotics of orthogonal polynomials on the real line were obtained from the characterization of orthogonal polynomials as the solutions of a matrix Riemann-Hilbert problem. The authors develop an alternative approach to the asymptotic analysis of orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle based upon a scalar Riemann boundary value problem. This problem brings together monic orthogonal polynomials, functions of the second kind and the Szegő function. The main result is applied to the Szegő asymptotics for orthogonal polynomials with respect to an analytic real-valued weight on the circle.
