The work under review studies pure (mono-, epi-) morphisms in (pro-, ind-) categories. Such morphisms were introduced among others by \textit{J. Dydak} and \textit{F. R. Ruiz del Portal} [J. Pure Appl. Algebra 190, 85--120 (2004; Zbl 1055.18005)] under the name ``strong (mono-, epi-) morphisms'' which seem to be already taken for another class of morphisms. The central question of the work under review is when a pure monomorphism in a pro-category pro-\({\mathcal C}\) is a regular monomorphism, in the sense that it is the equalizer of a pair of morphisms. The authors prove this implication under the assumption that in \({\mathcal C}\) finite products or push-outs exist. The similar question for epimorphisms was also treated. There, the condition for the implication ``pure epi implies regular epi in pro-\({\mathcal C}\)'' is that \({\mathcal C}\) has weak limits, or pull-backs, or copowers. Finally, every things can be formulated for ind-categories by using duality.
