Let \(E\) be an elliptic curve over \(\mathbb Q\). For a prime number \(p\), let \(E(\mathbb F_p)\) denote the set of rational points of \(E\) over the finite field \(\mathbb F_p\). In this paper, the author proves an analogue of the Erdős-Kac theorem for the quantity \(\omega(\#E(\mathbb F_p))\), where \(\omega(n)\) denotes the number of distinct prime divisors of \(n\) and \(p\) is a prime of good reduction of \(E\). Let \(\mathcal P_E\) denote the set of primes of good reduction of \(E\). The main result of the paper states that: if \(u \in \mathbb R\), then \[ \lim_{X \to \infty} \pi(X)^{-1} \# \left\{ p \leq X : p \in \mathcal P_E, \; \frac {\omega(\#E(\mathbb F_p)) - \log\log p}{\sqrt{\log\log p}} \leq u\right\} = \Phi(u). \] Here, \(\pi(X)\) is the prime counting function and \(\Phi(u)\) is the standard normal distribution function. The result is unconditional for curves with complex multiplication. When \(E\) is non-CM, the author needs to assume a weak form of GRH (more precisely, that no Dedekind zeta-function \(\zeta_K(s)\) has a zero in the region \(\text{Re}(s) > 1 - \delta\) for some fixed \(\delta > 0\)).
