The authors give a new proof of Greenberg's theorem: ``Let \(G\) be a non-trivial finite group. Then there exists a connected compact Riemann surface \(S\) whose automorphism group is isomorphic to \(G\)''. The proof is based on elementary Galois theory and hyperbolic geometry. As an application they study non-degenerate families of \(G\)-coverings \(f=\{f_u\}_{u\in N}:X=\{X_u\}_{u\in N} \to Y\) of the complex projective line and they affermatively answer the equivalence problem for such coverings under the assumption of the existence of a point \(o\in N\) such that \(\Aut(f_o)=\Aut(X_o)\).
