Let \(G= \mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb R)\) and \(N= \left\{n(x)= \left(\begin{smallmatrix} 1&x\\ 0&1\end{smallmatrix}\right): x\in\mathbb R\right\}\). Let \(\lambda\in\mathbb R^*\) and let \(\psi_\lambda\) be a character on \(N\) defined by \(\psi_\lambda(n(x))= e^{2\pi i\lambda x}\). A Whittaker space for \(G\) is a space of functions \(W: G\to \mathbb C\) invariant under right translations by elements of \(G\), and satisfying \(W(ng)=\psi_{-\lambda}(n)W(g)\) for every \(g\in G\) and \(n\in\mathbb N\). The authors consider the space of all smooth Whittaker functions which are compactly supported mod \(N\). A Whittaker-Plancherel inversion formula is proved for such functions. The Kuznetsov transform and Kuznetsov inversion formula [see \textit{N. V. Kuznetsov, Mat. Sb., N. Ser. 111(153), 334--383 (1980; Zbl 0427.10016)] play a central role in this proof.}
