Starting from the necessity of replacing the assumption of the existence of a smooth partition of unity with a weaker one, in C.~J.\ Atkin's extension of smooth functions in infinite dimensions, the notion of confined spaces arises. A Banach space \(X\) is said to be confined if there exists a bounded \(C^\infty\) map \(f:X\to X\) such that \(f(x)=x\) in some neighbourhood of the origin. Confined spaces prove to be a useful class of Banach spaces. In his works, Atkin gave examples of confined spaces. The present work is devoted to enlarge the class of confined spaces. The main result is that any C*-algebra is a confined space. As a corollary, any Hilbert space is confined. To prove this, the authors recall smooth mappings between Banach spaces and use the Weyl functional calculus.
