Veech surfaces are pairs \((X^0,\omega^0)\) of Riemann surfaces of genus \(g\) and holomorphic differentials with the property that a natural action of \(\text{ GL}_2^+ ({\mathbb R})\) defines an only complex onedimensional Teichmüller curve on the moduli space \(M_g\). Another characterization can be given by a lattice (Fuchsian group) \(\Gamma\) inside the affine group \(\text{ Aff}(X^0,\omega^0)\) acting on certain charts of \(X^0\) outside the zeros of \(\omega^0\). The periodic points of \(X^0\) are those whose orbit under the action of the affine group is finite. In this well written paper, the author contributes many interesting new results to this theory, e.g. about - the coincidence of \textit{algebraic primitivity} (simplicity of the Jacobian) of \(X^0\) and \textit{geometric primitivity} (if \(X^0\) is not a covering surface), - the relation between periodic points on \(X^0\) and the Mordell--Weil group of a certain Prym part of the Jacobian, - finiteness of the Mordell--Weil group and bounds for its order, - the relation between periodic points, Weierstrass points and zeros of \(\omega^0\). Besides previous work by Veech and McMullen, the main tool is the author's paper [J. Am. Math. Soc. 19, No. 2, 327--344 (2006; Zbl 1090.32004)].
