The authors are concerned with the numerical approximation of the solution of a model convection-diffusion boundary value problem when the convection dominates. They upgrade the standard bilinear finite element method using appropriately graded meshes. For this new method they prove optimal order error estimates with respect to the singular perturbation parameter. Some numerical experiments are carried out. They underline the properties of the method and enable a comparison with the Shishkin method.
