The Heisenberg group \(\mathbf{H}\) is a Lie group with underlying manifold \({\mathbb R}\times{\mathbb C}\). The group law is given by \[ t(t,z)(t',z')= (t+t'+2\operatorname{Im}z\overline{z'},z+z'). \] Let \(M(\lambda)\) be an operator-valued function such that \(\sup_{\lambda\in{\mathbb R}^*}\| M (\lambda)\| _{\text{op}}<\infty\). The operator \(T_M\) defined by \[ (T_Mf)\widehat{ }(\lambda)= \widehat{f}(\lambda) M(\lambda),\quad f\in{\mathcal J}(\mathbf H), \] is called a multiplier operator. A local integrable function \(b\) on \({\mathbf H}\) belongs to \(\text{BMO}({\mathbf H})\) if \[ \| b\| _{\text{BMO}}= \sup_B{1\over{| B| }}\int_B| b(u)-b_B| \,du<\infty, \] where \(B\) is an arbitrary ball and \[ b_B={1\over{| B| }}\int_B b (u)\,du. \] The \(\text{CMO}({\mathbf H})\) is the closure of all \(C^\infty\)-functions with compact support in \(\text{BMO} ({\mathbf H})\). The result of the article is a sufficient condition for the commutator \([b,T_M]\) that is given by \[ [b,T_M]f= b(T_Mf)- T_M(bf),\quad f\in{\mathcal J}({\mathbf H}), \] be compact on \(L^p({\mathbf H})\), \(1<p\leq 2\). An analogous result for the boundedness of the commutator in \(L^p({\mathbf H})\) was obtained by one of the authors earlier in [\textit{H. P. Liu}, Sci. China, Ser. A 36, No. 11, 1317--1328 (1993; Zbl 0791.43009)].
