Given \(h\) an \(L_1\)-integrable function on \(I= [a, b]\) and \(\alpha> 0\), set \(f(x)= (P^\alpha_\pm* h)(x)\) where \(P^\alpha_\pm(t)\) denotes either the well known Riemann-Liouville kernel or the Weyl kernel when \(I= [0, 2\pi]\) and \(h\) is a \(2\pi\)-periodic function. Here \(*\) represents the usual ``convolution'' operation. In this paper, the behaviour of the least deviations of \(f\) in \(X= C[a, b]\) or \(X= L_p[a, b]\), \(1\leq p\leq\infty\) with respect to the class of the rational functions of degree \(n\) is analyzed. More precisely, set \[ R_n(f, X)= \text{Inf}\{\| f- r\|_X: r= p/q\} \] \(p\) and \(q\) being polynomials of degree at most \(n\) and \(\|.\|\) denoting the usual uniform or \(L_p\)-norm, \(1\leq p\leq\infty\). Then, results involving the limit of \(R_n(f, X)\), as \(n\to\infty\) are established. In this respect, some old and new statements are brought together within the general framework of the rational approximation of functions from the Hardy-Sobolev spaces on the unit circle. Here, \textit{A. A. Pekarskii's} theorems given in references [Mat. Sb., N. Ser. 124(166), No. 4(8), 571--588 (1984; Zbl 0567.41016), ibid. 127(169), No. 1(5), 3--20 (1985; Zbl 0578.30032)] of the paper become fundamental.
