Let \(X\) be a compact complex manifold. One important problem in geometry concerns existence and uniqueness of metrics of constant scalar curvature on \(X\). This problem is closely related to approximations of an infinite dimensional symmetric space by finite dimensional symmetric spaces, as first advocated by S. T. Yau and then pursued by Donaldson and others. Specifically, let \(L\to X\) be a positive line bundle. Let \(\mathcal H\) be the space of positively curved Hermitian metrics on \(L\). Then \(\mathcal H\) is an infinite dimensional symmetric space. Let \(N_k=\dim H^0(L^k)-1\), and \(\mathcal H_k=GL(N_k+1, \mathbb C)/U(N_k+1, \mathbb C)\), a finite dimensional symmetric space. The main purpose of this paper is to prove that geodesics in \(\mathcal H\) can be uniformed by geodesics in \(\mathcal H_k\).
