In this interesting paper, the authors prove a version of the Sobolev theorem for the Riesz potential operator, within the framework of metric measure spaces \(X\), in variable exponent Lebesgue spaces, when in the formula \[ \frac{1}{p^\#(x)}=\frac{1}{p(x)}-\frac{\alpha}{Q(x)} \] for the Sobolev limiting exponent, there stands a substitution \(Q(x)\) for the dimension, which is variable. First, they give some consideration of measure regularity conditions related to what may be called ``variable dimension''. The case of von Koch curves is specially considered. For the Riesz potential statements, they assume that \(X\) is a bounded subset of \(\mathbb{R}^n\) with the standard Euclidean metric and \(\mu\) a Borel regular measure finite in every ball. To obtain a variable dimension imbedding theorem, the authors deal not with the usually considered version of the Riesz potential for metric measure spaces, but its modification \[ J^\Omega_\alpha u(x)=\sum\limits_{2^i\leq 2 \text{diam\,} \Omega} 2^{i\alpha} \int\limits_{B(x,2^j)} |u(y)|\,d\mu(y), \] where \(\Omega\) is an open subset of \(X.\) A number of statements are given, including the Sobolev type statement for the case \(\alpha< \inf\frac{Q(x)}{p(x)}\) and the exponential-type estimate for the limiting case \(\frac{Q(x)}{p(x)}\equiv \alpha.\) The authors also consider corresponding embeddings in Hajłasz spaces.
